Generally, the overall domestic drug market maintained downturn over the last few years due to the impact of hike in prices of grain, cotton and edible oil, and false and deceiving advertisements, however the trend analysis findings for leading varieties of first half of 2005 market show that the American ginseng root market is on an upturn to a large extent, it seems to be satisfactory.
The overall quantity of sale and sale amount of money for American ginseng root products over the past three years in drug stores presented a growth trend, yet in an amplitude not quite high, but the average price of products was showing a downward trend all the time. The 2003 sales amount of American ginseng root products in drug stores is RMB 584.45 million, with a growth rate of 5.19% and the 2004 data is RMB 631.25 million, with a growth rate of 8.01%, however the sales status of the first half of 2005 shows that the sales amount of such products in drug stores presents a very slow growth. The selling price for the whole lines of American ginseng root products sold in drug stores is showing a downward trend over the past three years, the average price of each package has dropped down to 14.87 Yuan in the first-half of 2005 from 15.22 Yuan of 2002.
American ginseng root products in the world are mostly produced in Wisconsin of the United States, Toronto and Vancouver of Canada, Huairou of Beijing, Heilongjiang Province, Jilin Province, Liaoning Province, and Wendeng Country of Shandong Plrovince. According to incomplete statistics, the whole world annual yield of American ginseng root products is about 6000 to 7000 tons, in which about 4000 tons is sold to China's Mainland, others to China Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand and other Southeast Asia countries and regions. At present Canada ranks first in the world by the yield of American ginseng root products, occupying approximately a 70% share, and the second place is held by the United States. The total yield of such products in China is about 400 to 500 tons, in which about 400 tons from Beijing and the northeast provinces, accounting for about 5-6% of the total of the world.
Statistical figures indicate that the annual domestic market demand for such products is 2000 tons, there is an 1500-ton gap, if the present annual domestic yield of American ginseng root products is estimated as 500 tons, from the demand which has year after year an uptrend. The present domestic yield accounts for about 20% of the world total, it is still far apart from the market capacity. On this account, the consumer market outlook for American ginseng products is good.
